AVG and gmail with Barca

Postby zebra77 » Sun Jan 22, 2006 2:12 am

Hi,
I have a question. When I get my email from gmail to Barca, no AVG scanner pops up telling me it's scanning my email. This is making me nervous. When I get my email from my POP3 web account to Barca, the AVG scanner pops up telling me it's scanning.

Anyone know if AVG is truly not scanning my email into Barca from gmail? If it is, why is the scanner box not showing?

Thanks!
Zebra

:!: No AV can scan secure connection (TLS/SSL). That's why you don't get that popup.
GMail is pretty secure against any kind of malware, so you shouldn't worry too much.

This not only applies to Barca, but to all other email clients.

Hope that helps.

Very interesting. Okay, I'll stop worrying about it. It's funny, though, because Norton DID scan all my emails (showing me their scanning box every time), so I think some AVs can. In any case, you're right about Gmail and I never open attachments, so I should be all set.

Thanks again.

OE can do this

Postby zebra77 » Sun Jan 22, 2006 6:42 am

Hey, I just found out that Outlook Express can use AVG and gmail and it DOES scan those emails, so there must be something funky with Barca on this. I just talked to a friend who uses OE, AVG, and gmail and every single email gets scanned by AVG on her system.....any further thoughts on why this is so?

Thanks!

:!: Some further information:
Encrypted connections cannot be scanned by any antivirus.
They can only be scanned in MS Outlook using dedicated scan module (like EMON for NOD32 or MS Outlook/Exchange provider for avast! for example).
Thats because MS Outlook uses MAPI interface which is different than one used in other standard POP3 mail clients.
The thing is you use SSL on port 995. Because of this, the data is encrypted and as such cannot be checked by email scanners, no matter whether it's NOD32, KAV or something else unless you use a special plugin for your mail client.
So either your friend uses a plugin in OE to scan email, like Stunnel, or something changed in his version or AVG to apply the same principle as Outlook.

FYI: Barca nor Poco use MAPI, due to the security risks involved.
Perhaps this question has been asked already at the AVG forum.

Hope this gives you some insight.

See the help section on creating servers on the AVG site at:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5616/lng/us/tpl/v5
This will allow Pocomail/Barca or just about any email program scan using SSL.
