What's with the "banned words" not working?

Postby Guest » Wed Oct 20, 2004 10:07 am

OK, so I've been struggling again to get PocoMail 3.2 to filter Junk mail. I mean, simply using the built-in filters without my beloved but memory-hogging K9 anti-spam software.

I put the word "Cialis" on the "Banned Words" list just yesterday. I have Junk Mail filtering enabled, both the standard filters and the Bayesian (the "what-a-joke-of-a-slow-learner Bayesian fliter" as I've come to see it. Sorry for the sarcasm.).

A few moments ago, I got an email with the subject "CIALIS-LOW COST" and it landed safe and secure in my "In" box.

I have "CIALIS" "cialis" "Cialis" all in my list, each on a separate line.

So what's the problem? Anybody know?

Gary Speer

(For what it's worth, Thunderbird's learning filter took about 2 hours after I tweaked one setting in their mailnews.js file to start hitting more than 95 percent on the exact same email that PocoMail's entire Junk Mail Filtering can't get 80 percent on. Why??)

Did you put the word into the "Banned Subjects" file (junksubject.txt) or into the "Message Body" file (junkbody.txt)? If you put it in the later then you also have to associate a penalty with the word, e.g.,
Code: Select all
"Cialis",+9

I agree!!!
Some words work, some don't.
Right now Rolex is the latest one.
I've entered it in the Banned Subject but it still arrives in my Inbox.
Since installing the latest upgrade of Poco my junk mail filtering, which was near perfect before, is poor. First thing in the morning I get about 60 to 90 emails, 99% of which is junk. Used to ALL go into Junk, but now I get about 20% get into my Inbox. Not a big deal, not enough to rant, moan and complain, but it used to be better that that.

Check the following:

1. When you reinstalled, is Junk Mail Filtering still enabled?
2. In your filter list, is there any other filter above the Bayesian filters (On all Mail)?

Yes, in the filters EVERYTHING is above the "run junk mail filters."
Has been like that since I came back to Poco earlier this year. I have a vague recollection of being told to do that, but I could be remembering it all wrong.
I'm presuming that's not the way to have them then?
Can I move it to the top without deleting the other 8 filters?
Thanks for the help.

Maureen.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for that information. (I'm "Guest" above -- didn't realize I wasn't logged in at the time. )

I just looked through the help files in Poco 3.2, and found only part of that information referenced. It would be very helpful -- and I know this isn't your job, I'm not implying it is! -- if the help files had more detailed information like that in your post.

Also, and this is for Slaven, Jim or any other Pocosystems folks reading this -- it would be VERY helpful, when using the right-click Junk Mail options, to be able to "ban" a word or phrase instead of just the "subject" "address" or "domain" options there now.

Your filters should be arranged in the order in which you want messges filtered: from the most stringent to the least (I think :? ). For example, if you have (only) two filters A and B, where filter A moves all messages coming from domain @goomail.com into folder Good-Folder, and filter B moves messages with subject 'Rolex' into Junk Folder, a message from mybestfriend@goodmail.com with subject 'Rolex' should end up in Junk folder if filter B is placed above filter A. The reverse should be true if the relative positions of the filters are interchanged.

OK, so I have filters to put my seven most important emails directly into their allocated folders, and of those I have three filtered to also alert me with a different sound for each. Besides the junk filter I also have a filter to move all emails with a blank subject line into the trash.
So, I should put them this way? :-
Junk Mail Fliter.
Blank Subject Move to Trash
Then the seven moving to allocated folders with the four that also play a different sound first.
Would that be the best way?
Thanks very much.

Maureen.

Well THAT didn't do any good :(
This morning 'Rolex', a banned word, still poured into my Inbox as well as a bunch of obvious spam.
It used to work so perfectly, I haven't changed any settings, except yesterday.
