Teaching Poco For Junk

When I get junk, I (R) click on that junk mail and choose to mark as junk and move.
Do I need to do more?

It should be enough redd. :)

However when you're using the preview pane you can use the buttons 'File as Junk' and 'Classify as Good', so you don't have to rightclick and the message is moved automatically to Junk.

Only pressing one button. :D

I know we've explore Poco's junk mail filtering with many, many discussions, but I've just got to ask one more time -- what sort of sensitivity settings, etc., do I have to get before the Junk Mail Filtering classifications really start to work??

I have a couple of email addresses that receive constant email from idiots guaranteeing they can get great exposure for my domains using their search engine service, or something like that.

The subject lines always have something to do with the domain getting broadcast around, or something like that -- but of course, they never say the same thing.

I can mark each one as it comes in using the "Mark as Junk Mail" and move menu selection. Which is what I do -- BUT NO MATTER HOW MANY times I mark something as Junk Mail within Poco -- it NEVER gets sorted and sent into Junk Mail when I download similar mail later.

Is there really no way to make the Bayesian filter work? As I and others have often said, K9 and other third-party software will train and work like a snap -- while Pocomail's lame little junk mail filter never seems to learn.

This is what I wrote a while back and it's till effective. It may or may not help. Good Luck.

dribnus wrote:I used to really question PM's Bayesian system.....however, after much playing around with it, I have been able to get it to stay at about 98-99%.
Here are the steps that I took to get it to this point, as far as I know, these have not been mentioned in the forums. I also have a check mark in the "Run Standard Non-Bayesian Filters"
1. Any spam that is missed, classify it as 'junk' and move to 'junk folder using the 'file as junk' icon
2. Any 'GOOD' message that is sent to junk, right click on it, and, click on 'declassify as junk', then 'classify as good', after that, drag it back to the appropriate folder.
** 3. I think this is the important part....after you have many emails, at least 100, in the 'junk' folder, Highlight all emails, and then press "CTRL + F4", click on 'JUNK' Multiple times, @15.
4. While all emails are still selected, right click on messages, choose "Junk Mail Filtering", then 'Tag Junk Messages', after that choose 'show untagged' in the 'show...' dropdown menu.
5. Everything this is untagged, is still NOT classified as 'junk', and you will need to repeat the 'classifying' steps above, until they are consdidered 'Junk' when you do the 'Apply and Test' step.

I just know that after I took these steps, and repeated them about once a week, I don't have to anymore, and I'm running about 98-99% accuracy with 0% 'false positives'

Hm. I have to say -- your advice here seems a bit odd, but I'll have to give it a try. :D

Thanks. I don't think I saw this when you posted it before.

It's been a few months since I have done that, but ever since, everything has worked fine. You may or may not be aware of this, but there is an option to test an email to see if it will be classified as junk. This option is in the "Junk Mail" setup under "Status". Sometimes it takes about 15 times of telling PM that an email is "junk", before the test option will show it that way. That's why I mentioned clicking on the junk option @ 15 times to make sure it understands that it's junk email.
I little of wack, I know...but, hey...whatever it takes I guess.
