The Long & Winding Road

Postby croths » Wed Jan 03, 2007 12:32 am

I'm finding this very frustrating, teaching Poco what is junk mail. She just won't listen!!! I'm new to this, used a separate program until just before Christmas and I'm not techy one little bit so all those settings mean nothing to me. I found a post where Eric mentioned his settings so I copied them, he's smart so he should know. I was getting an accuracy only in the low 40's, now it's a bit better at 58 but mail with some obvious words, like 'online casino' and 'Viagra' are still getting into my In Box, and I'm getting loads of casino ones just lately. I have over 23,000 junk words and almost 9,000 good. I know you can't help me, I'm just having a moan.

Try to use word lists functionality as well.

Maybe learn more good words - I'm not sure how is that with Poco, but other specialized bayesian filter program recommends to keep the ratio of junk to good words around 1:1 for best results. Maybe someone more experienced with bayesian filters in Poco could comment on that?

I did try to up my good words but I guess I get a lot more junk mail than good mail  Now got it at 25,000 junk and 13,000 good.
Things are not getting any better, I'm now down to 42% accuracy and emails with different subjects but identical bodies keep pouring into my In Box. When I started up this morning one was sent to the Junk folder and 18 went into my In Box, all junk!!
Not that I want to bash Poco as I love it but I did download and run Foxfire, that got it figured out a whole lot quicker. I ran them together on the same mail for a couple of days and Foxfire ran circles around Poco. It's un-installed now, didn't want to keep it, just wanted to try it out. I wish Poco could learn as fast.

I don't have a problem with Junk here, but I guess that depends on which Junk you get.
It differs from person to person. :?

I know from first experience the Bayesian filter needs some work, because I've been tweaking it a lot.
However if you've put everyone inside your address book or allowed senders/domains, you could try the following incoming filter.

Just put it before your Junk Mail filter.

It needs some further development, so it can improve better on recognizing bad from good mail. Never tried Thunderbird, but from what I've read, it seems to be a very good Bayesian filter.

Maybe for the next upcoming version/upgrade.

Thanks Eric, I will try that and let you know. Silly of me, I meant Thunderbird and not Firefox, all muddled up today. Nothing to do with the after effects of the holidays I assure you
A happy new year to you.

You're welcome Maureen.
It should work just fine, but remember that if that address isn't inside your address books or allowed senders/domains, it will be classified as Junk.

Quite late for having a hangover from the holidays.

Good luck with that filter.
