Smartphone sync support

Postby willia4l » Tue Mar 17, 2009 11:47 pm

I have been using barca pro for about 2 years now great program but it seems like there has been no new releases for a very long time. I have been waiting for a blackberry integration for about a year but it seems like there has not been a solution created yet.

I am sure I am not the only one with this issue it looks like there are several posts requesting this. I am not a programmer but I do understand what applications need to make them work. One of the main issues is the export functions in barca. The calander is a major issue because most thrid party apps are looking for a format of Outlook to import.

Blackberry is looking for the following mapping for the calander:
Field mapping used for translation:
ASCII Importer/Exporter Device
Description Title --------------- Description Title
Notes --------------------------- Notes
Location ------------------------ Location
Alarm Date ---------------------- Alarm Date
Alarm Time ---------------------- Alarm Time
Start Date ---------------------- Start Date
Start Time ---------------------- Start Time
End Date ------------------------ End Date
End Time ------------------------ End Time
Alarm Flag ---------------------- Alarm Flag
Free Busy ----------------------- Free Busy
Private ------------------------- Private

You can export the Calendar file in Barca but blackberry desktop does not like it because of the mapping. The good thing is the export file is a flat file.

I created a meeting and exported it:
BEGIN:VCALENDAR
VERSION:2.0
PRODID:-//BarcaPro//2.5.3910
METHOD:PUBLISH
BEGIN:VEVENT
DTSTART:20090318T160000Z
DTEND:20090318T163000Z
TRANSP:OPAQUE
SEQUENCE:0
UID:D8956416-0C11-435B-A771-211C67D9A3AC
DTSTAMP:20040212T010643Z
SUMMARY:Meeting with Barca to FIX Blackberry SYNCE ISSUES!
CLASS:PUBLIC
BEGIN:VALARM
TRIGGER:-PT5M
ACTION:DISPLAY
DESCRIPTION:Reminder
END:VALARM
END:VEVENT
END:VCALENDAR

So it looks like the mapping would be like this:

Field mapping used for translation:

ASCII Importer/Exporter Device
Blackberry BARCA
Description Title --------------- SUMMERY
Notes --------------------------- DESCRIPTION
Location ------------------------ LOCATION
Alarm Date ---------------------- Alarm Date ??
Alarm Time ---------------------- Alarm Time ??
Start Date ---------------------- DTSTART
Start Time ---------------------- Start Time ??
End Date ------------------------ DTEND
End Time ------------------------ End Time ??
Alarm Flag ---------------------- Alarm Flag ??
Free Busy ----------------------- Free Busy ??

I am taking a guess at the barca mappings and I am not sure about some of them. I noted them as ??

Does anybody know what the Barca mappings :P :P :P   are? I was thinking of writing a script to do the mapping. I am not sure about the pico scripting langauge so I was thinking of maybe creating a perl script to do the translation. Does anybody have any suggestions?

-Thanks

Barca exports calendard to iCalendar format:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICalendar

There might be more ways of how to get iCalendar data to Blackberry, since icalendar is a standard format. There is this converter for example:
http://www.hoomanb.com/cs/jical/
that will convert iCalendar to CSV which might be more easier to import to Blackberry.

Calendar time incorrect

Postby willia4l » Fri Mar 20, 2009 9:18 am

For some reason my exported calendar time is incorrect. Off by one hour. Gui is correct but the exported time shows the following:
I have an event at 10:00am, GUI shows 10:00am

BEGIN:VCALENDAR
VERSION:2.0
PRODID:-//BarcaPro//2.5.3910
METHOD:PUBLISH
BEGIN:VEVENT
DTSTART:20090321T160000Z
DTEND:20090321T170000Z
TRANSP:OPAQUE
SEQUENCE:0
UID:C7243BAF-207F-43F7-825E-37B85CA8730F
DTSTAMP:20040212T010643Z
DESCRIPTION:Notes
SUMMARY:BARACA CAL
LOCATION:LOCATION
CLASS:PUBLIC
BEGIN:VALARM
TRIGGER:-PT1M
ACTION:DISPLAY
DESCRIPTION:Reminder
END:VALARM
END:VEVENT
END:VCALENDAR

==========================
The DT times are off by an hour:
DTSTART:20090321T160000Z
DTEND:20090321T170000Z

It should be
DTSTART:20090321T150000Z
DTEND:20090321T160000Z

Is barca doing some internal daylight saving adjustment or am I doing something wrong?

I don't know if this will work for you or not, but I also have a BlackBerry, and I solved this problem (sort of) by using Google Calendar. I just input the appointments into Google Calendar and then use Google Sync to get them on my BlackBerry. It defeats the purpose of using Barca for a calendar, but it does accomplish the purpose for me. I don't even use Barca's calendar anymore because the sync with my BlackBerry is so difficult.
