Migration from Organizer and TheBat!

Postby nickdutton » Wed Sep 22, 2004 3:18 am

I'm in the middle of a bit of a downer with TheBat right now and am looking at potential replacements.

Poco was always on my shortlist and Barca seems as if it would make a nice integrated solution.

I'm pretty sure that, give or take a few odds and ends, barca's e-mail capability is a match for TB - and its interface is lovely.

I'm a bit more nervous about Organizer. I'm prepared to frig the transfer of notes and the more unique features of Organizer and the calendar import seems pretty slick, but what about the contacts? This seems very weak, or am I missing something?

I've given up on the little address import field mapper window, it's too small and doesn't seem to let me map all my fields anyway. What about vcard support?

This will be used for my business, so I'm not really in a position to "play" too much.

TIA,

Nick.

Clearly, you can clearly see the contacts module in front of you so you are aware of its capability; so what exactly are you looking for? With a definite question comes a definite answer

In addition a search in the forums for "contacts" may throw up some threads of interest (although by definition it will show some that are not relevent).

Fair comment...

I trimmed a rambling post down and somehow lost the plot.

I've looked at Barca in some detail, like what I see, and now want to try it out with a snapshot of my mail and organizer data.

Unfortunately, unlike the malboxes, the contacts don't share a common export/import format. The barca csv import is clunky to say the least and I was interested to know if anyone else out there had done the same: Lotus Organizer --> Barca.

If their experiences were positive, then I'd consider spending the time to grind though the import process. Even better, someone may have a better solution that I've missed.

Hi Nick

I remember Lotus Organiser from years ago...what formats can you export the addresses in? If you could export it in .csv then the .csv import doesn't look as bad as you suggest (no worse than Excel's .csv import for example); but I've not used it so beyond that pithy comment I can't say much more. But the interface could be improved...maybe that is what you mean :)

Sorry I can't help further - over to someone else.

All the old ones: CSV, dBase, FoxPro. But it does do vCard.
Organizer is still a compelling solution: 100% reliable and *fast* on today's hardware. I actually went back to it after a few years with OL2K, at the same time that I went to TheBat! I do miss the integrated solution however - hence my interest in Barca. Poco and TB! are too close to call in terms of functionality for me to migrate just my mail client.

If you could export it in .csv then the .csv import doesn't look as bad as you suggest (no worse than Excel's .csv import for example)

I've tried that, but (and here's a specific question) what am I supposed to do with the last 10 fields that it gives me that are marked as "Ignore this field"? It seems that it's recognised that I'm trying to import a record structure with 20 fields, but I'd like to see _all_ of Barca's available fieldnames so that I can decide on the mapping. I think this it is worse than excel's!

Thanks for your prompt responses though - I really am keen to give barca a fair chance to impress me.

I know that the contacts module has been criticised in the past and that PSI are aware of it: I guess improvement sits in the queue of things that people want sorted, together with IMAP, Baysian filtering, syncing with handhelds etc...

Don't give up on it though, I think it is a good piece of software with a lot still to come!

In the Unofficial FAQ there is a section on the format of the address.ini file here. It may be possible to import your Lotus file into (say) Excel, re-arrange the columns, then export the csv as address.ini. Now I know that this is more work than simply asking Barca to do it, but it might be a viable workaround to get you going?

I posted a thread with some idea for improvement to the csv import function here.

That looks perfect... wish me luck, I'm doing it now.

Update - Worked a treat!

Constructed a new CSV in Excel and renamed it .ini and opened it in Barca.

Feeling very pleased with myself now and off for celebratory beer.

Will try to batch up my questions for you from now on, but here's a quick couple in the meantime:

1. Is this list available to as an e-mail or newsgroup?
2. Are contacts limited to three e-mail addresses?

Thanks again,

N.

Great! I'll have one too :D

No - the only thing you could do is to watch a thread and then you'll get notified by e-mail when someone posts to it.

Not sure what you mean by this one :?

Thanks again,

N.
My pleasure!
