How to enable SSL (secure connection) for SMTP?

Postby abbyk » Thu Aug 19, 2004 11:50 pm

Hello, my ISP is blocking my own smtp server and forcing me to use their smtp server which requires secure connection for SMTP.

When setting up the SMTP server, I can't find the option "This server requires a secure connection" for SMTP outgoing server in pocomail. So I'm getting the

530 5.7.0 Must issues a starttls command first

error.

How to fix that?

Thanks in advance :)

Have you tried "Accounts | Incoming | Enable secure connection" ?

Yes I did, but doesn't work.

What I need is to enable secure connection for SMTP (outgoing), not POP3 (incoming)

Right, it's not there, but it's close, Accounts -> Outgoing:

I did set the authentication type to cram-md5 and entered the correct information under "outgoing server authentication" but didn't work.

I contacted my ISP and they told me I must enable SSL connection for my outgoing server :(

I could never get Poco's native SSL to work. I used OpenSSL with Stunnel ( open source software) as a Proxy Server and it worked great. Here are general directions to do it.

As far as I know, abbyk, "outgoing SSL" in PocoMail has not been implemented yet (but incoming SSL works).

Note also that there is a difference between "outgoing authentication" and "outgoing SSL". PocoMail currently supports the first but not the second.

Well, that's one more thing that needs to be there in 3.2 so that Pocomail doesn't lose more ground to its competitors.
