Old issue revisited

Postby Fueler » Tue Apr 07, 2009 12:42 am

Been using poco for over a year now. Reasonably satisfied other than a couple of things awaiting the update.

It's been discussed before but I couldn't find the thread.
Why is it that email via Yahoo and AOLl comes in all goobly-gooked in some kind of html mode? Tough to read.

Anything I can do to fix that either globally or on the fly?

Thanks
Dave K.

Most common cause of that is antivirus. Eg. AVG changes headers of messages it scans, so that they pretend being plain text when in fact they are HTML ones.

I do use AVG. Is there a fix?
It only seems to be yahoo and aol accounts.
Come to think of it the latest ones in question would not have had any html pics. It was all dumb text to begin with or should have been.

Here is a sample.

<table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0" ><tr><td valign="top" style="font: inherit;"><DIV id=yiv1923444485>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Site Code.......&nbsp;FCC2E5AE</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; MID.......D39D-058F-B56B-BB37</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>John Doe</DIV></DIV></td></tr></table><br>

The messages have text/html content type before AVG jumps in and changes it to text/plain.

You can disable the email scanning module in AVG.
Messages will still be scanned by the background scan when message is saved to the folder, thus it will not affect the security.

I could do that but I find it darned strange that only yahoo and AOL generated messages are affected.
All others with html images including the spam, especially the spam, :roll: come through just fine.

Keep working folks.

Yahoo and AOL do not use the proper coding for HTML e-mails (lazy html?).

There should be something close to this:
Code: Select all
Content-Type: text/html;
   charset="iso-8859-1"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">

Yahoo uses:
Code: Select all
Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1

<head>
<style type=3D"text/css">

Notice it does not indicate the DocType??? Tells you it has CSS -- Cascading StyleSheets -- which is not enough to decode properly all the time if you do not use InternetExplorer or if the body of the message is modified by an antivirus.

That makes more sense.
