Bayesian filters learning

Postby seabc » Thu Jun 30, 2005 10:03 am

I have a question about helping Bayesian filters learn, which so far they have not done at all for me. I am wondering about the interactions between Bayesian Filters and two other types of filters I have created. These two are:

1) My ISP offers the wonderful feature that it will deliver mail to me at my own address (*.net) as well as my name at *.com. Since I get a fair amount of spam to the *.com address, and nothing legitimate, I created a filter that deletes such messages without downloading.

2) Before I began trying Bayesian filters, I created some filters that increase the junk score of messages that certain characteristics.

Now my two questions.

1) Messages get sent to the Junk folder because of my filters that increase their junk scores, even with the Bayesian filters indicating that the message does not appear to be junk. So, in such cases, do Bayesian filters only "learn" that a message is spam when I click on the "File as Junk" button? In that case, then Bayesian filters are not learning the right thing because of my filters, unless I hit the "File as Junk" button for messages that are already in the Junk folder. And if I do that, what happens to my statistics, which I understand influence how Bayesian filters work?

2) Does deleting messages before download effect my filtering statistics in any way?
