W7 64 annoyances

Postby djgtram » Wed Jan 13, 2010 12:20 am

Although in general Poco (4.8) works without major problems on new Windows platforms, there are minor annoyances like recurring error messages (the program keeps working fine after dismissing them) and rather shaky support of printing, some 64-bit printer drivers are not found and used correctly by Poco. Can we hope for some development work going on in the background...?

Hi Gabor, thanks for pointing it out, I took a note. 64bit printer driver specific problems were not reported yet, but occasionally we get a printer problem reported - I think it might be a time to upgrade the printing module.

I have to stand corrected, I've just tracked it down to a Xerox printer driver issue. Poco is exonerated and free of those charges... :-)

But the sporadic error message does pop up. I'll copy it the next time around.

Here it is:

Access violation at address 0051825E in module 'Poco.exe'. Read of address 00000018.

It's pretty slim for information, I know, but this is all there is. Clicking on OK (the error message often appears twice in a row, in that case clicking twice) keeps the program going on without any obvious later problems.

I've experienced error messages like this prior to running Win 7 x64 where I also see it. Under my old XP Pro configuration, I would occasionally see these.

Sometimes I'll get an "index out of bounds" message too.

Not sure what causes either of these; but in all cases if I exit Poco and restart it, the "problem" goes away.

Oh, another issue I just remembered. All other Net programs I use are capable of telling W7 that they are default handler candidates in Start Menu > Default Programs > Set your default programs. Pocomail doesn't appear in that list, thus I can't assign mailto: to it, for instance.

This is different (I can tell my browser to start Poco for a mailto:, anyway, only that Poco will not start a new message, just start). What I mean is the proper registration with Windows. This means the appropriate entries under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail.

It is documented at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd203067(VS.85).aspx .

I have the same "Access Violation" messages here. I'm using Widows 7 Professional x64, BarcaPro last version.

Just love Barca Pro and wouldn't like to change my mail client only because of this error.

But i'm really annoyed about these messages poping up every time i click an e-mail.

Is there anything i can do? Is there any new version coming?

Please try to set the compatibility backwards for Barca.exe, to Windows XP, by right-clicking on barca.exe, in properties, compatibility tab. You can also try to disable visual themes there.
