setting up accounts in Poco - provider is fastmail

Postby Kimmy-K » Sun Jan 09, 2011 7:59 pm

Hello. I used to have fusemail as my email provider... but they are terrible and I never could get Poco set up with them.
Now I have switched to fastmail.

On their website, fastmail provides a "Set up email client" option and a list of email clients. Poco is on the list , but the step by step directions are extremely outdated.

I tried to do it myself, but can't seem to get it right.
I'm sure that I still haven't entered the basic info. right.

For example, which port numbers to use. Fastmail recommends some, but I am confused which one I should use.
Right now I've got 465 as Incoming, and 587 as Outgoing.

Also, are outgoing and incoming servers the same? (fastmail says to put mail.messagingengine.com as servers... I put that in both outgoing and incoming.

Do I enable the "enable secure SSL" ?

Do I enable the "use same username/password for outgoing server" box?

Do I check the "Use TLS/STARTTLS box in Outgoing tab?

On both Outgoing and IMAP tabs I put authentication type as PLAIN, as fastmail seems to suggest.

I'm just not sure what I'm screwing up.... something must not be entered right.

Here is the link to the page where fastmail gives server & port info.

http://www.fastmail.fm/help/remote_emai ... ports.html

Any ideas as to what I should change in my Poco accounts set up?

Thanks for any effort to help.

As a fastmail and Pocomail user, I can help you. Sorry for the slow response, I do not check this forum often.

Here are settings I use which works:

General Tab
Name: enter the part of your email address before the @ sign
E-mail: your complete Fastmail email address
Incoming Server: mail.messagingengine.com
Enable secure connection (SSL) - uncheck this box
Check this account when checking mail - check this box
User Name: your complete Fastmail email address
Password: your Fastmail account password
Outgoing server: mail.messagingengine.com
Use same username/password for Outgoing Server - uncheck this box

Incoming Tab:
All settings can be left at their default settings. It is your personal preference to change them.

Outgoing Tab:
Outgoing server port number: check this box and enter 26 for the port number
Use Outgoing Server Authentication: check this box
Username: enter the part of your email address before the @ sign
Password: your Fastmail account password
Authentication Type: select LOGIN
Enable secure connection (SSL) - uncheck this box
Additional personal information: Your personal preferences.

Notification Tab:
Show this account in the Console - check this box

Everything else in remaining tabs can be left at their defaults. It is your personal preference to change them.

If you have multiple Fastmail accounts/aliases, then:

General Tab:
Name: enter the part of your alias email address before the @ sign
E-mail: your complete alias Fastmail email address
All Server settings should be left blank and unchecked except Outgoing Server: mail.messagingengine.com because everything incoming is going to be delivered through your primary Fastmail email address

Incoming Tab: same as above for one Fastmail account

Outgoing Tab: same as above Outgoing Tab for one Fastmail account (should be your primary Fastmail account settings)

Hope this helps.
